Amtrak California is one of only two jointly-operated companies with Amtrak, the premier rail service provider for the United States (the other being Amtrak North Carolina). Amtrak California is a partnership operation between Amtrak and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) which operates three main rail lines in the state: the Pacific Surfliner between San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, and San Diego; the San Joaquins between Sacramento or Oakland and Bakersfield; and the Capitol Corridor (described below).

Running between Emeryville and Chicago, the California Zephyr is a long-distance, cross-country service that stops in Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver, Omaha, and Des Moines.

Capitol Corridor
This train service operates between San Jose in the Silicon Valley and Sacramento, connecting the San Francisco Bay Area with the State Capitol. It has the second highest ridership in the Amtrak California rail network, beaten only by the Pacific Surfliner in Southern California, and it provides additional services east of Sacramento to Auburn and Colfax in the Sierra Nevada. Soon, the Capitol Corridor would further operate east to serve Reno and Sparks in neighboring Nevada to complement the California Zephyr service.
