Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a heavy-rail commuter train service that operates as a hybrid rail line. It operates as a subway in the urban areas of Berkeley and Oakland in Alameda County, and in San Francisco, and it operates as commuter rail outside these areas, providing frequent, reliable service for residents in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Mateo Counties. And soon, BART will expand further south of Fremont to serve Santa Clara and connect Richmond with San Jose and Milpitas.

- 3xxx series: Driver cab, which houses the driver's console
- 4xxx series: Passenger cab
Compared to the old rolling stock, the Bombardier Fleet of the Future trains sport the following features:
- Three doors on each side, allowing much faster and smoother passenger loading and unloading
- Less seats and more standing room (however, the seats are ergonomic in design, making cleanup easier)
- Actual bike parking spaces (three on each car), freeing up additional space for wheelchairs and strollers
- Standee poles and more handstraps that allow passengers to hold on when trains move at a high rate of speed
- TV screens that show train location and passenger safety reminders
- Automated voice and digital annunciators for the blind, deaf, and mute
- Rubber floors, allowing quicker cleaning times and less opportunities for graffiti and scratchitti (etched graffiti)
- Digital destination boards on each side of every car (plus on the front and back ends)
- LED lighting which consume less energy than conventional flourescent lighting
eBART (BART to Antioch)The new eBART line, linking Pittsburg/Bay Point with Antioch, operates independently of BART. It has its own train tracks different than conventional BART; consequentially, it operates a different train type, the Stadler GTW diesel multiple unit train.
